186: The Wonders of Creation

From the largest of galaxies to the tiniest of cells, there are some fascinating things science can teach us. But is there something it all has in common? Could there possibly be anything God’s Word could have to say about science?

This week on the podcast, we’re going to be looking at some of the lessons that Creation has to teach us. Fasten your seatbelt for a look at some amazing things from science—and we promise there are no formulas to memorize or quizzes at the end! We’ll also begin counting down the last couple weeks of our contest, and much more. That’s all this week on the Sharpening Character Podcast!

The July Challenge!

As we head into July, we’ll be looking at a way to put into practice one of the most foundational principles in God’s Word: learning and applying the truth, especially from the “everyday lessons” we find all around us. As we’re encouraged by King Solomon in the book of Proverbs, we’re going to work on “Tak[ing] fast hold of instruction” as if our lives depend on it (Proverbs 4:13), and doing so by writing things down to help us remember (Proverbs 7:3).

So, here’s our challenge for this month: Write down something you’ve learned each day this month in a notebook or journal!

Some examples:

  • Something that stood out to you in God’s Word
  • A “life lesson” from an experience during the day
  • A piece of wisdom or instruction (correction/reproof) you got from someone
  • Some new fact or information (from school, research, etc.) from the day
  • We suggest you use a pocket-sized notebook to make it easier to write down things as you get the opportunity to—research shows this actually helps our brains remember better!

Also, for the very first time, this month’s challenge comes with a contest! Head on over to our contests page to find out how you could win one of two prize packs or our grand prize, including a subscription to Log and Jotter notebooks and a Fisher Space Pen!

As always, our goal with the challenge is not to simply “check it off,” but to use it as a springboard to learn the lessons God is teaching us through the everyday. And by learn, we’re talking about actually applying them, and seeking God’s guidance for how we need to change to become more like the men He’s called us to be. We’re looking forward to learning along with you as we seek the Lord together this month!

Be sure and check out our challenges page for more information!

  1. So one thing that the Lord has been showing me in my life is how to be humble. I just came back for Alert basic training and it is easy to have a big head about it. But God used it to show me how not to be like that I am proud on what I did and what it did for me but it makes me no different then anyone who didn’t do it. But God used it to help me with my future job. As a cop you have to be very humble if not you could get killed. Humility is key in life. That is what he has been teaching me for about a month.

    • That’s definitely a really good lesson to learn Travis! I’ve found some similar things to be true for me: it’s rather easy to get a “big head” from being a podcast producer…until I remember that God is the One that has brought all this together! I think that’s perhaps the biggest thing for humility: remembering that all we are, all we have, and all we do is really because of what God has done and is doing in our lives.

  2. Hi guys, a great episode! When you look at creation it sure makes you feel small! I am enjoying a major thunderstorm as I write this, God’s mighty power on display through nature. And yet, God sees when a sparrow falls from their nest, and has the hair on our heads numbered, that is awesome!
This week I failed God by not guarding my eyes, and thoughts as he has called me too. Something He is teaching me is in that failure, is to confess, repent, turn from the sin, AND get up again to keep running the race. Satan is the great accuser of the brethren, and will constantly remind us of our failures, and try to keep us down, but God says in 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. So, I need to take a hold of God’s promises and press toward the mark of the high calling in Christ. Phi 3:13-14 13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, 14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

    • Thanks Israel, for the kind words, and your candor and honesty in sharing. It seems so often in my life that the “dark times” are the ones that hold the greatest lessons to learn…but only if we’re willing to be honest and admit where we made mistakes and need to change. It’s easy to get caught up in the pride of “I’m all good,” and that’s exactly when we often seem to fall the hardest (Don’t ask me how I know that–*cough* personal experience *cough* 🙂 ). Praise God that He *IS* merciful and ready to forgive us when we come back to Him!

  3. I learned that God created everything and we were not just made by coincidence. I also learned to put God into everything I do.

  4. Bro, absolutely spectacular episode! Astronomy and microbiology are my two favorites in Science. Our Creator really has made our bodies and environment with such vast complexity that it is mind boggling! Won’t it be so cool to hear God explain His creation in person?! This is a new favorite! Thanks!!

    • Aww, thanks Dar’! It was a lot of fun to put this one together! And absolutely–something to definitely look forward too in eternity, eh? 🙂
